Jackson State routed South Carolina State 37-7 in a week zero football contests in Atlanta. Over 24,000 fans showed up for this intriguing 2021 Celebration Bowl rematch. With the JSU win the SWAC captured its 2nd straight win over The MEAC.
JSU head coach TC Taylor found all the answers early as Irv Mulligan galloped 64 yards to give JSU a 7-0 lead after the 1st quarter. Buddy Poughs and SCSU ‘s offense was stuffed by Jackson State in the first half. A 40 yard scoring pass from and 31 yard FG put JSU on top 17-0 at halftime.
The 2nd half began like the 1st half. JSU quarterback Jason Brown tossed 2 TD passes to in the 3rd quarter to DJ Steven's and Andre Hunt. Another field goal by Gerardo Baeza put JSU on top 34-0 heading into the 4th quarter. SCSU's offense continuing to sputter they did manage a late touchdown to make the final score 37-7.
Statistically JSU outlined SCSU 450 to 112. SCSU was held under 100 yards in rushing & passing while only averaging 2.9 yards per play. JSU quarterback Jason Brown set the tone going 25-29 for 356 yards and 3 TDs. 8 different JSU receivers had a reception led by Duke Miller with 9 receptions. Irv Mulligan from JSU led all rushers with 90 yards on 11 carries.
