SIAC Football: Savannah State upset Clark Atlanta

Savannah State upset a previously undefeated Clark Atlanta 35-28 on Saturday.

Savannah State took a 7-0 lead on their second drive of the game when quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Demeke Colbert with 7:18 left in the first quarter. The opening quarter would end with Savannah State leading 7-0.

The 2nd quarter saw a combined 28 points scored by both teams. First Clark Atlanta's James Summersett scored on a 51 interception return. Savannah State would then get 14 unanswered points. A 72 yard touchdown run by Joseph Hampton then a 32 yard pass from Jhaydon Sullivan to Khiry Wallace gave Savannah State a 21-7 lead. With 3 seconds left in the half CAU's David Wright threw a one yard TD to Trayvon Pinder to make the score 21-14 Savannah State at halftime.

Clark Atlanta tied the game at 21-21 with a 57-yard touchdown pass by David Wright III to Armone Harris. Clark Atlanta recovered an onside kick at Savannah State's 23-yard line, but the drive ended with a missed field goal attempt. Savannah State took over at their own 45 and scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass to take a 28-21 lead into the 4th quarter.

The 4th quarter saw Savannah State extend the lead 35-21 with a 2 yard plunge by Demeke Colbert. CAU got one final score on another David Wright TD pass to put the score at 28-35. Savannah State would hold on and get the win 35-28.
