Howard University men's basketball team beat Tennessee St 88-84 in the 3rd annual ATL Hbcu Challenge.
The game was back and forth with each going on runs and dry spells. There were 10 ties and seven lead changes. Tennessee State made a late push in regulation to send the game into overtime, tied at 75. Howards struck early in overtime and never looked back. Freshman Blake Harper knocked down back to back 3 point baskets in the first 30 seconds to give Howard an early 81-75 lead in the extra period.
The teams traded baskets in the overtime period. Tennessee State’s Brandon Weston and Carlos Williams led the way for the Tigers. Howard’s Bryce Harris (preseason MEAC player of year) scored 6 points in overtime to guide Howard to the win. 84-88.
Brandon Weston from Tennessee St scored a game high 26 points. Weston also grabbed 11 rebounds. Justus Jackson knocked down 22 points for Tennessee State.
Howard freshman Harper Blake led 5 players in double figures with 18 points. Bryce Harris scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bison.
The ATL Hbcu Challenge is put on by Travis Williams and Hbcu All Stars LLC. The event will also host CIAA vs SIAC crossover games on Saturday. Hbcu All Stars will also host an All Star game on final four weekend in San Antonio, Texas.
